Next Generation GMAT rolls out June 5, 2012 with new IR section

WHAT IS GMAT®? NEW INTEGRATED REASONING SECTION ON GMAT®
GMAT®, acronym for Graduate Management Admission Test, is administered by Pearson Vue® on behalf of GMAC® and is required by all Graduate Schools of Business for admission purposes.  The GMAT, according to GMAC®   (Graduate Management Admission Council®) that owns the trademarks GMAT®  and GMAT CAT®, is one measure of your ability to complete sucessfully the first year of graduate study program (MBA degree program) at a Graduate School of Business. GMAT® is administered in a CAT® (Computer Adaptive) format in which the GMAT test® 'adapts' the difficulty level of GMAT questions to your GMAT-specific 'comfort level', with 'higher difficulty level GMAT questions' carrying higher GMAT raw scores (GMAT Scaled Scores) than do 'lower difficulty level' GMAT questions. The currenet generation GMAT is available for test-taking until June 2, 2012 after which only the next generation GMAT featuring one essay and the new Integrated Reasoning section will be launched.

The new Integrated Reasoning Section on the GMAT

Effective June 5, 2012, GMAT® has introduced a new section called GMAT Integrated Reasoning section that will replace the Analysis of an Issue essay. The new section will be a 30-minute long addition to the GMAT and will follow the Analytical Writing Assessment. In the next generation GMAT, the Analytical Writing section will feature just one essay -- Analysis of Argument essay - and the Analysis of Issue essay will be removed. In effect, the addition of Integrated Reasoning section will not alter the duration of the GMAT test, which will remain 3 and 1/2 hours, not counting the two "optional" breaks you will receive: one right after the Integrated Reasoning section and the second break after the quantitative section. The new IR section will feature 12 questions of 4 different types and the section will be scored on a scale between 1 and 8, and will feature an on-screen calculator. However, the quantitative reasoning section that will follow the Integrated Reasoning section will not allow you to use a calculator.MLIC GMAT prep courses prepare you with the most comprehensive GMAT preparation in all GMAT assessment areas, including the newly introduced Integrated Reasoning section. MLIC Editorial on new Generation GMAT

The more things change, the more they remain the same. The new Integrated Reasoning section is akin to the Data Interpretation questions that are part of the GRE® General Test, which is actively competing with GMAT® as the required admission test for MBA programs. The new IR section will feature some questions that are multiple response type, which requires that you choose more than one answer to the same question. The new IR section will replace Analysis of Issue essay. This seems like an illogical move by GMAC®, considering that Analysis of Argument essay tests the same critical reasoning skills that are tested in the GMAT Verbal Assessment. A more appropriate and logical decision would have been to eliminate the Analysis of argument essay and let the Analysis of issue essay remain. After all, your ability to understand and analyze complexities of an issue, take positions, and provide reasons and examples to support your position are critical leadership skills that Graduate Schools of Business must value.

What skills are measured on the GMAT®

The GMAT tests your Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning skills, and your ability
  • to process information in context,
  • to make necessarily true and probable interpretations of information presented,
  • to stay focused on the specifics,
  • to test different scenarios and consider other possibilities while testing for consistency of decisions; and
  • to apply quantitative concepts learned in high school to solve problems and to make logical decisions.
  • The GMAT test also is about your ability to determine whether GMAT sentences are logically, clearly, correctly, and effectively written.
assessment areaTested sections (New G GMAT)time allottedScore Range
Analytical Writing Assessment
  • Analysis of an argument
30 minutes Scored on a scale between 0 and 6. It takes a score of 5.5 to receive a score in the 80th percentile. AWA score is reported separately and not combined with the total GMAT score.
Integrated Reasoning
  • Multi-source Reasoning
  • Two-part analysis
  • Graphics Interpretation
  • Table analysis
  • 12 Questions
30 Mins.Scored on a scale 1-8, with scores changing in 1 point increment. The unofficial score reported at the end of the GMAT test will not include scores in this section and in the AWA section. Percentile Scores will be adjusted each month during 2012 and periodically from 2013. The official score report you will receive in about 20 days will feature the scores in AWA, IR, and the other adaptive sections. The IR section features an on-screen calculator, which will not be available for the quantitative section that follows.
Quantitative Assessment (adaptive)
  • Problem Solving
  • Data Sufficiency
  • 37 Questions
  • 28 Q's are scored
75 minutes0-60 (scaled scores of greater than 52 are rare). Scaled scores are converted to contribution to total score by applying a factor, which is typically between 8 and 8.2. A scaled score of 45 on the quantitative section will correspond to a contribution of about 350-370 to the total score.
Verbal Assessment (second adaptive section)
  • Critical Reasoning (13-14 questions)
  • Reading Comprehension (4 passages, 14 questions, one passage not scored)
  • Sentence correction (13-14 questions)
  • 41 questions in total
  • 30 Questions are scored.
75 minutesScored on a scaled ranged between 0 and 60, with scores of greater than 45 uncommon. Again, the scaled score is multiplied by a factor that is between 8 and 8.2 to determine the contribution of verbal section to the total score. A scaled score of 40 in verbal assessment will correspond to a contribution of about 330 points to the total score.
If you score a scaled score of 46 in math assessment, and a scaled score of 40 in verbal assessment, your total scaled score is 86. You then multiply this by a factor of 8.1 (typical) to get a total score of about 700. AWA score is not combined with the scaled scores from the adaptive sections, and interpreted as a stand-alone score.
If you want to be considered for admission to A-list Business schools that typically rank among the top-10 schools, you need to present a score of better than 700.
